Brown leaf tips are a common symptom of a wide range of issues on majesty palm.
Seeing brown leaf tips on your majesty palm? You're not alone! This is a fairly common occurrence, but unfortunately, it's not as easy to answer as it sounds. While it's one symptom, the brown tips on the fronds can pop up from a number of different reasons. Here are some of the most common:
- Drying out: Majesty palm likes to stay consistently moist, but not wet or soggy. If the potting mix dries out too much, the fronds will start turning brown and dry.
- Staying too wet: Underwatering and overwatering start out similarly on the plant because the roots are suffering. If majesty palm gets too much water, the roots can't breathe properly, then start to die and rot.
- Too much fertilizer: If majesty palm (like most plants) is fertilized too much, either at one time or over time, fertilizer salts build up in the soil and damage the roots. If you think this may be the problem, flush the soil with large amounts of water to help dilute the salts so the roots can recover.
- Exposure to drafts: Hot or cold drafts, such as being near an exterior door or heating/cooling vent, can also cause leaflets to develop brown tips. Try to keep your majesty palm in a spot where it's not exposed to streams of air that have a different temperature than the ambient air.
- Exposure to cold temperatures: Because majesty palm is a tropical plant, it can suffer when exposed to temperatures below 50F/10C.
- Exposure to chemicals: A wide variety of chemicals can burn majesty palm's fronds. If it's near a window, for example, and the window is sprayed with a cleaner, overspray onto the plant can harm it. Air fresheners, other cleaning products, hairspray, etc., can, as well.
