Two-Pot Combination

My plant arrived in a plastic grower pot inside of a decorative pot. Do I repot the plant into the decorative pot?

Decorative and growers pot – Do I keep the plant in the grow pot or plant it in the decorative pot?

It is common to find houseplants displayed in a two-pot combination. A double pot combination is when the soil and the plant are contained in a simple plastic grow pot with drainage holes in the base, and the grow pot is then placed inside a decorative pot to attain a more polished look---and to protect floors and furnishings from water that may drain from the plant.

Decorative pots have two main purposes, to decorate and protect. These are the pots that we buy simply because we like how they look, their color and texture, and they protect surfaces from damage from leaking water.

The growing pot has a different purpose. The grower pot is functional, lightweight, easy to manage, and most importantly, comes with water drainage holes that will keep your plant healthy.

With a double pot, you have the best of both worlds. You have the more functional and useful grow pot, and at the same time, you have a decorative that suits your decorative needs and protects surfaces from water damage.

Do I keep the plant in the grow pot?

Our recommendation is, yes. When you buy a plant with a two-pot combination, it is always better to leave the plant in the grow pot. Then use the decorative pot just to cover the grow pot, which is functional, but not so pretty. The reason for keeping the plant in the grow pot is simply to protect the plant from overwatering issues.

How do I water my plant in a two-pot combination?

Pull the grow pot out of the decorative pot. Take the plant to the sink, turn on a thin stream of lukewarm water and let it run all over the surface of the soil. Water the soil thoroughly until you see a steady flow of water is draining out of the holes in the bottom of the pot. Allow the potting soil to drain all the excess for 15 minutes, then bring it back into the decorative pot. This procedure will keep the soil well drained and the plant roots healthy.
