One of the most common questions we hear is, "What size pot should I get for my plant?" Here is a quick guide to help you choose the perfect pot for your new plant!
How Pot Sizes Work:
Pot sizes are usually measured by the opening at the top rim (Diameter). Sizes are given in inches and can range from tiny 2 inch pots up to big 12-inch or even 15-inch pots and larger.
Choose a pot that’s roomy enough for both your plant and a bit of extra potting mix. We suggest going for a pot that’s about 2 inches larger than the plant you’re buying or repotting. So, if you’ve got a plant in a 4-inch nursery pot, a 6-inch pot will give it the right amount of space to spread its roots and grow.
Planter Sizes 101: Finding the Perfect Spot for Your New Greenery
Most plants you see in retail stores and online start out in greenhouses or nurseries, where they’re grown in plastic nursery pots. These pots come in various sizes. You’ll usually find sizes like 2” (mini), 2.5" (teacup), 4' (small), 6” (medium), 10” (large), and 12” or bigger (extra-large).
Here’s a quick breakdown:
- 2" and 2.5" plants: Great countertops, tables, or as accents with bigger plants
- 4” and 6” plants: Great for countertops, tables, or as accents with bigger plants.
- 8” or 10” plants: Perfect for the floor, or outside on a patio or deck.
- 12” and 15” plants: These big guys need space to spread out and shine, so find them a roomy indoor spot where they won’t feel crowded.
Plant's Height Includes The Size Of The Pot:
At Costa Farms, we measure the height of our plants from the bottom of the pot to the tallest leaf of the plant. So, if you order a plant that is 24 inches tall, keep in mind that the plant will be 14 inches tall and the pot 10 inches. Here is a visual example of how the products are measured:
