Geogenanthus or Geo is a lush, beautiful plant with leaves that will make clear when it is not getting the moisture it needs.
Geo is a plant native to tropical rainforests where it doesn’t ever dry out. If its soil gets dry, Geo wilts. If it gets too dry, the leaf edges will turn brown/crispy. The crisp edges on the leaves will not heal. You can trim off the brown edges but make sure you leave a fine edge of the brown material in place to serve as a "scab". If you cut into the living part of the leaf more of it will die back in order to form a new "scab" to stop the "bleeding" (loss of xylem).
When the surface of the soil begins to dry it is time to water. In many homes this may mean twice a week in the growing season. Because the plant needs its soil to stay moist it is important to make the soil is well drained. The plant likes moist but never soggy soil. If you have ever grown a peace lily it is similar but likes life even more on the moist side.
If you have ever wanted to try water wicking or a terrarium this plant is an ideal candidate. The plant is currently available in a self-watering, Wick & Grow pot.
Drafts can also cause leaves to turn brown, especially cold air, such as being next to an air conditioning vent. A heating vent blowing on the plant can have the same impact.
Too much fertilizer will damage its roots, preventing the plant from absorbing as much moisture as it needs. This can also lead to browning leaves.
Give the plant bright but indirect light for best color and this plant does best with above average humidity.
