Caring for Lucky Bamboo

Costa Farms lucky bamboo comes in a pot with a glued pebble mulch and no drainage. Here is how to care for it successfully.

Pebble Mulch:
The glued pebble mulch is water-permeable. You can pour water directly onto the pebbles, and it will pass through. This glued pebble mulch helps hold the design structure of the plants solidly together.

Watering:

  • 5-inch pot: Water with one-half cup of water every 5 days.

  • 2-inch pot: Water with one-third cup of water every 5 days.

If you are worried about overwatering, allow the water to sit in the pot for a few minutes so the soil can absorb what it needs. Then, take the plant to the sink and gently lay it on its side. The pebble mulch will keep the plant stable while allowing any excess water to drain.

To check soil moisture before watering, use a wooden toothpick. Slide it between the pebbles into the soil about halfway down the pot. If the toothpick comes out clean, the soil is dry, and it’s time to water. If soil sticks to the toothpick, the soil still has moisture, and you should wait to water.

Light:
Lucky Bamboo thrives in bright, indirect light but can also tolerate medium light. Avoid placing the plant in full sun, as this can scorch its leaves.

Fertilizer:
Fertilize only in spring and summer using a time-release fertilizer pellet made for houseplants. Sprinkle the pellets on top of the glued pebbles. Each time you water, a small amount of fertilizer will be released into the soil.
