Can you keep your bonsai indoors?
While bonsai trees are often associated with outdoor gardens and patios, many varieties can be kept indoors successfully with the right care.
Moving an indoor-suitable bonsai inside can protect it from harsh weather and provide a more stable environment. However, keeping a bonsai indoors is not simply a matter of placing it on a windowsill and forgetting about it.
The first step is choosing an appropriate location with plenty of natural light. A bright window is usually ideal, especially one that receives several hours of sunlight each day. Keep the bonsai away from heating vents, air conditioners, and cold drafts, as sudden temperature changes and dry air can stress the tree.
Watering also requires attention when a bonsai is kept indoors. Because indoor conditions can slow evaporation, the soil may stay damp longer than it would outside. Check the soil regularly and water thoroughly when it begins to dry, allowing excess water to drain from the pot. Avoid keeping the roots constantly wet, which can lead to serious problems.
Humidity is another important consideration. Heated indoor air can become much drier than the environment many bonsai trees naturally prefer. Placing the tree near other plants, using a humidity tray, or running a humidifier nearby can help create a more comfortable environment. Good air circulation is also helpful for keeping foliage healthy.
With the right placement and consistent care, an indoor bonsai can become a beautiful year-round feature in your home. Give it adequate light, monitor its watering needs, and protect it from extreme indoor conditions. Most importantly, remember that different bonsai species have different requirements, so understanding your particular tree is the key to keeping it healthy indoors.
